Arrive in Kinlochleven on Friday. Michael and I shall be in Kinlochleven from around 14.30 onwards. For those of you that have arranged to get a lift down with us, we shall pick you up from outside Morrison’s Supermarket in Inverness at 12.30. The bunkhouse that has been booked for our exclusive use is the West Highland Lodge which is located in the village, but up on the hillside. The Schedule for Saturday is as follows:
· Meeting with Kinlochleven Community Trust, (KCT), development officer Moira Hartley at 10.15 at their office. Further information on the KCT can be found at: http://www.kinlochleven.co.uk/ and I would suggest that you read up on this organisation and on the significant changes that it has undergone in recent years from its previous incarnation as Kinlochleven Land Development Trust, (KLDT).
· Meeting with Rab Lees of Community Energy Scotland . Rab is a graduate of our programme and is in fact currently working on his MSc in SRD. Community Energy Scotland are a highly significant organisation in terms of sustainable rural development and have been involved in a number of innovative projects in recent years. · Meeting with Jamie Smith, Managing Director of the Ice Factor. Ice Factor is home to the largest indoor ice climbing facility in the world and was first to market. In addition there are international standard indoor rock walls and the most recent addition of the outdoor high level adventure course. As a business, it has been awarded the following accolades: The UK's Premier Mountain Adventure Centre, The National Centre for Ice Climbing, The Mountaineering Council of Scotland Regional Centre of Excellence, Winner Scottish Thistle Award 2005, 2006, 2007, Winner National Business Awards 2006, Winner Dynamic Place 2006 - Best Architectural Project, Winner Green Apple Award Best Environmental Project Europe 2007, Winner Nation's Favourite Lottery Project and Winner Highland Tourism Business of the Year 2008. Jamie himself has been awarded Entrepreneur of the Year, National Business Awards 2007, Institute of Directors, (IoD) Emerging Director of the Year 2007, SCDI Entrepreneur of the Year 2008 and IoD Regional Director of the Year 2009. As a graduate of Strathclyde University in both BSc Pharmacology and MBA along with graduating from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, (MIT), he is involved in several other entrepreneurial activities. Following this series of meetings, there will be an AGM of the UHI Sustainable Rural Development Students Society. That will then conclude the formal aspect of the day. Dinner has been booked at the Ice Factor for Saturday night at 19.30 along with breakfast on Sunday morning, (time to be determined!)
